No-Logs Policy Explained

Understand what no-logs really means, why it matters for privacy, and how to verify a VPN's logging practices.

What is a No-Logs Policy?

A no-logs policy (also called zero-logs policy) is a commitment by a VPN provider not to collect, store, or track any data about user activities, connection times, browsing history, or traffic content. This means if authorities request user data, the VPN has nothing to provide. True no-logs VPNs only collect the bare minimum information needed for account management (like an anonymous customer ID), never activity data.

What Data Might VPNs Log?

Not all VPNs are truly no-logs. Some collect connection logs (when you connected, which server, how long), usage logs (bandwidth consumed, general activity patterns), or even traffic logs (websites visited, data transferred). Marketing claims of 'no-logs' sometimes hide logging of connection metadata. Real no-logs policies explicitly state that no activity data, connection metadata, or traffic information is collected or stored.

Why No-Logs Matters

Without a no-logs policy, VPN providers can be compelled to hand over your data to authorities, advertisers, or other third parties. This defeats the primary purpose of using a VPN. No-logs policies are especially critical for journalists, activists, and anyone in restrictive countries. Even for everyday users, no-logs protection ensures your browsing history remains truly private.

Verifying No-Logs Claims

Many VPNs claim no-logs, but not all deliver. Look for independent security audits from reputable firms that verify the no-logs policy. Check the company's jurisdiction—countries with strong privacy laws (Netherlands, Switzerland) make it easier to maintain no-logs commitments. Review the privacy policy for specific details about what data is and isn't collected. Real-world legal tests (like EdgeVPN being unable to provide data even if requested) validate no-logs claims.

How It Works

  • VPN is designed from the start not to store activity data

  • User connects and authenticates (only email/payment stored)

  • All browsing activity passes through servers without logging

  • No records exist of websites visited, data transferred, or connection times

Key Benefits

  • Complete privacy protection from the VPN provider itself
  • Nothing to hand over if authorities request user data
  • Protection from data breaches affecting user activity
  • Peace of mind that your activity isn't being tracked or sold
  • Essential protection for journalists, activists, and privacy advocates

Common Myths Debunked

Myth

All VPNs that claim no-logs actually maintain no-logs

Reality

Many VPNs falsely claim no-logs while collecting connection metadata or keeping activity logs. Always check for independent audits and read the privacy policy carefully.

Myth

No-logs policies are just marketing

Reality

Legitimate no-logs policies backed by audits provide real privacy protection. They've been tested in court cases where VPN providers successfully demonstrated they had no data to provide.

Myth

VPNs need to keep some logs to function

Reality

VPNs can operate perfectly without storing activity logs. Basic account information (email, payment) is needed, but browsing history, connection times, and traffic data aren't required for VPN functionality.
